Understanding the Role of Backup Generators

Diesel generators play an important role in data center resiliency, but they are not designed or permitted to serve as a facility’s continuous source of power.

In the latest That’s a Great Question, Aligned CTO Michael Welch addresses a common misconception about how backup generators are used at data center facilities.

Generators are permitted under state and federal air regulations for emergency use. Their operation is limited to defined circumstances, including maintenance activities and true grid emergencies. Outside of those circumstances, they cannot be used as an ongoing source of power.

These requirements are clearly defined through the air permitting process and place specific limits on generator operation.

Watch the latest episode of That’s a Great Question to hear Michael explain how these regulations govern the use of diesel generators at data center facilities.
